Good morning! Let's Hammer Out the Weather!
So, first things first. As I've been saying, this storm will not be any way near as strong as the blizzard we saw over Christmas weekend. Just wanted to make sure to reiterate that. The wind, in fact, will stay pretty calm throughout today.
Light snow will begin falling starting in New York City this morning and overspread Long Island throughout the morning as well.
Temperatures as you wake up and get ready for work will be in the upper 20's. If you're heading out really early, five to seven a.m., you will probably see flurries starting, but I think it's fair to say your morning commute is salvaged - even if you leave for work around eight or nine.
Expect light snow to continue all day long with high temperatures just above the freezing mark this afternoon. This will help to keep some of the area roadways in good shape. The only way snow will stick easily to the road surfaces during the middle part of the day is if any heavier snow squalls develop.
With temperatures right above the freezing mark you need heavy snowfall for a decent period of time, between a half hour to an hour at least, to help drop the road surface temperatures down to the freezing mark.
Once the roadways hit 32 degrees or below, that's when you'll start to see snow stick to the streets and begin to create slick spots. The snow shouldn't have any problem sticking to grassy surfaces from the get-go, however.
The one thing we'll have to watch today, a reason to stay on top of any additional updates throughout the day, is the development of a narrow band of heavy snow. This band looks like it will be at its strongest point just North and East of New York City and run diagonally from Northwest to Southeast. This band will slowly pivot across Long Island throughout tomorrow evening. The towns that are affected by this heavier snow will obviously see the higher snowfall amounts from this mini-snowstorm.
Any heavy snowfall will quickly taper off to light snow and then flurries by tomorrow morning.
So, how much snow are we talking about?
SNOWFALL TOTALS BY TOMORROW MORNING:
I'm still sticking with my original forecast of a general 2"-4" of snow, with the potential for 6" across Eastern Nassau County on Eastward through Central Suffolk County, higher amounts (closer to 6") on the North Shore in this area. Lighter amounts on the South shore.As for tomorrow's forecast, it will be another cold day and there is the chance for a few snow showers to develop. We have several areas of low pressure in the vicinity of the mid-Atlantic coastline and it looks like at least Southern New Jersey will see a period of light snow tomorrow night. I'm pretty confident a few snow showers reach Long Island as well tomorrow night.
It becomes breezy for Saturday and Sunday as well for that matter. Sunday will be mostly sunny as we finally get rid of most of the cloud cover. The start of next week looks OK, but I will be keeping an eye on the potential for a coastal snowstorm for the middle part of next week!
